ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Steuben County man is dead after investigators said he shot two patrol cars with a shotgun, sparked a 12-hour standoff, drove into a police barricade, and fought with deputies. Police say deputies fired their weapons during the incident, but they have not specified whether the man was struck or killed by their gunfire. According to the Steuben County Sheriff's Office, concerned family members called deputies to Angel Road in the Town of Cameron around 12:40 a.m. for a welfare check. They found Allen Hoad II, 50, outside a home. Investigators said Hoad shouted at deputies, then shot two patrol cars with a shotgun. No one was injured. Police retreated and called more deputies to the scene. The Steuben County SWAT team and crisis negotiators spent 12 hours working to convince Hoad to come out of the building unarmed. During that time, investigators said he threatened to come out with weapons intending to kill people. Police say Hoad got into a vehicle with a gun at 2:00 p.m. and drove away on Angel Road, then drove onto a field to evade a police barricade. He then allegedly drove from the field to Lower Swale Road, where he tried to get into an occupied home, returned to his car, drove directly at deputies, and crashed into a patrol car. Deputies began shooting, according to police, "to stop Mr. Hoad from causing serious injury" to them or the public. Hoad allegedly got out of the car and fought with deputies, but was taken into custody and hospitalized. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police did not specify whether any of the deputies' gunfire hit Hoad. They also did not mention his cause of death, or whether the New York State Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation would be investigating the case, as necessitated by New York State law in the case of any death caused by police officers.
