SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diegans have been in a frenzy on social media over the last day following a report claiming the beloved Barrio Logan restaurant, Las Cuatro Milpas, was set to close after 91 years in business. A post on the blog SanDiegoVille said the iconic old school Mexican joint would be going out of business sometime next year. An earlier version of the post also said the building housing the restaurant had been sold to a neighboring church. "Surprised ourselves by the news, only to confirm we are open and continue to look forward to serve you today and tomorrow," the restaurant posted on an Instagram it apparently created yesterday to set the record straight. "It was a shock, a pure shock," Sofia Estudillo, current owner of Las Cuatro Milpas, told FOX 5/KUSI Tuesday morning of the rumor. Santana High School alumni send weighted teddy bears to Apalachee High School shooting survivors Estudillo found out it had been circulating online when she began fielding phone calls from worried customers. She had been told it was apparently confirmed by a man who worked at the restaurant, but no such person exists — the current workers are all women. Founded in the 1930s by Estudillo's grandparents Petra and Natividad, Las Cuatro Milpas is an institution within San Diego's culinary scene. It is widely regarded as one of the best spots for authentic Mexican dishes like rolled tacos and tamales, as well as its warm hand-rolled tortillas. Over the years, the Barrio Logan hotspot has remained a community establishment in every sense — from humble décor to a loyal following that often makes its line wrap around the block. Estudillo said she plans to keep Las Cuatro Milpas open for as long as possible, "God willing." Since Estudillo says the restaurant is not going anywhere anytime soon, San Diegans who want to get a taste of the action can find Las Cuatro Milpas at 1857 Logan Avenue.
