EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) - A 22News viewer spotted a bear on their Ring camera in their East Longmeadow driveway early Monday morning. The video was sent to 22News from Jeff McCorkindale and Tara Reynolds of the bear at around 2 a.m. when the spotlight switched on. In the video, you can see the bear strolling up the driveway, sniffing at the vehicle. The bear then walks closer to the home and reaches the trash barrels. There must not have been anything appetizing in the trash since the bear can be heard sniffing the barrels and continues walking until it is no longer seen on camera. PHOTOS: Bald eagle spotted on Medford Street in Chicopee According to MassBears, black bears are common in Massachusetts with an estimated 4,500 bears living in the state. Black bears live all over western Massachusetts and as far east as the I-95 corridor in the northern part of the state. Black bears are omnivores and most of their diet is plants. Black bears live and breed in Worcester County, northern Middlesex County, and west to the Berkshires, according to Mass.gov. Bears that have been accustomed to and dependent on foods, such as bird seed, trash, and pet food, are likely to cause damage and become a nuisance. The removal of food sources and other attractants is key to preventing problems with bears. If you have a news tip, video or photos email us at [email protected].
