PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) —The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has decided it's no longer considering the I-195 parcel as a potential site for its new downtown transit center. RIPTA Interim Chief Executive Officer Christopher Durand said in a statement the decision comes after a thorough analysis of the site and public feedback. "We are evaluating several potential locations, with high priority given to those in close proximity to the Providence Train Station," Durand said. The goal of the so-called bus hub is to centralize RIPTA’s operations in the city and encourage the use of public transit. It is expected to feature a temperature-controlled passenger arrival and seating space. Kennedy Plaza would still be used for a reduced number of bus routes once the new transit center is fully operational, according to RIPTA. "Once we have a recommended site, we will hold an additional round of public input opportunities to share the ideas that have been developed after much work this summer," Durand said. The project is being funded in part by a $35 million bond referendum for improvements to RIPTA’s existing services. That funding was approved by voters back in 2014. Close Thanks for signing up!
