4 former Newport Gulls playing in World Series

NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — Every summer, college athletes play for the Newport Gulls hoping to one day make it to the big leagues.
Not all of them get to see that dream come true, but some find themselves playing for a world championship.
This year, four former Gulls are playing on baseball's biggest stage.

Chris Taylor - Los Angeles Dodgers
Taylor attended the University of Virginia before joining the Newport Gulls briefly in the summer of 2010.
He hit .364 in three games for the Gulls. Taylor eventually got drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the fifth round of the 2012 MLB Draft.

Will Smith - Los Angeles Dodgers
The catcher played in Newport during the 2014 season. He had 7 hits across 15 games and helped the Gulls win its sixth Fay Vincent Cup.
The Dodgers selected Smith with the 32nd pick of the first round in the 2016 MLB Draft.

Tommy Edman - Los Angeles Dodgers
Edman was a big part of Newport's 2014 championship team. He finished the summer with a .319 average, 10 stolen bases, and was named an NECBL All-Star.
The St. Louis Cardinals selected him in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

Jake Cousins - New York Yankees
Cousins played one season for the Gulls in 2016 and made the All-Star roster for the South Division as a reliever.
He started in six of the eight games he played and finished with a 2-1 record, a 4.26 ERA, and 31 strikeouts. In 2017, he was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 20th round.
