NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Millions of tourists visit New Orleans every year, and short-term rental properties are a popular place for them to stay. Throughout the year, guests may spend a few hundred dollars renting out a home or an apartment; however, during major events such as the Eras tour happening Oct. 25 to Oct. 27, prices can soar up to the thousands making the trip much more expensive. "It is crazy. If I have it in my checking account then let's go baby, but if it's not for you then I totally understand it," said one tourist renting an Airbnb. New Orleans hotels sold out ahead of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour While STRs are supposed to be permitted in New Orleans some homeowners who do not have permits list their properties online for rent anyway. "I think there are definitely instances of folks listing STRs that they think, 'Oh there's a large event coming into town," Jane Place Advocacy & Programs Director Angela Owczarek said. While the number of unregulated properties on these STR websites is believed to increase slightly during major events, it seems to be just a drop in the bucket compared to the overall problem throughout the year. According to Airbnb, there are currently 7,118 active Airbnb listings in the city with availability in the coming 365 days. However, the city STR registry currently shows only 1,847 issued permits. "This is a problem extremely endemic in New Orleans," Owczarek said. Inside AirBnB New Orleans Information To help combat these unwanted listings, Councilmember JP Morrell introduced an ordinance that would force STR platforms to enforce stricter codes, helping stop some of these unregulated residences; however, it isn't complete yet. "The ordinance language doesn't specify how the platforms will be held to task if this doesn't happen."
