A fundraiser at MAKE Cafe this Thursday will kick off a regular dinner series MAKE Projects, a local restaurant, farm, and social enterprise, is launching a pop-up dinner series this Thursday, October 24 that will continue on a regular basis to help the nonprofit establish a new venture in Normal Heights.
MAKE, which stands for merging agriculture, kitchens, and employment, is a 501(c)(3) social enterprise that spun off from the International Rescue Committee. Last fall, the group moved from 30th Street to University Avenue where they opened MAKE Café, which serves a menu of global cuisine. The organization, which runs a 12-week program to help train refugee and immigrant women for the workforce, also operates a one-acre farm in Mission Valley that supplies its restaurant and supports its CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) subscription program.
Over the next few months, the nonprofit will begin fundraising for its next restaurant, MAKE’s deputy director Samantha Forusz tells Eater. The location will be in Normal Heights at the corner of Felton and Adams behind Yoga Box studio, spanning a 3,000-square-foot café with a small garden. It’s slated to open in 2025, with executive chef Andrew Gerdes (Bouchon Bakery) overseeing the kitchen.
Its North Park cafe will remain operational until the new restaurant is up and running. Thursday’s four-course dinner will pay tribute to Haitian cuisine, kicking off with welcome mocktails of Haitian fruit punch and jus de citron, or Haitian lemonade, and includes Haitian-style pumpkin soup with MAKE Farms ingredients, fried green plantains with pikliz (Haitian pickled relish), local spiny lobster, and gateaux orange with roasted pineapple. Beer and wine will be available for purchase.
