Elgin chamber hosting Black Business Expo on Friday The Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a virtual Black Business Expo from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, on Zoom. A special presentation, “Effective Business Planning,” will be presented by Charmaine Marshall of Synergy Strategic Business Solutions, according to a news release. The presentation looks at the pros and cons of developing a business plan. The expo is being hosted by Rise Jones, a chamber board member and co-chair of the chamber’s BRIDGES Committee for Black and Brown entrepreneurs. Also making presentations will be Mary Nappier, regional support manager at Stanley Steemer; Jon Pierre Badie, business performance advisor at Insperity Inc.; Shirley Bassett, president of the African American Coalition of Kane County; Glenn Earl, business professor at Elgin Community College; and Nelicia Butler, counselor at Profound Roots Therapy Services. Appointments being taken for Hanover heating bill assistance Hanover Township is scheduling in-person and over-the-phone appointments for residents wanting to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP helps income-eligible households pay for home energy services, with funds available through Aug. 15, 2025, or until exhausted, a news release said. Residents can apply now if someone in their household is: 60 years or older; Receiving Social Security disability benefits; Under the age of 6; Has had a utility disconnected or received a disconnection notice. Beginning Friday, Nov. 1, all other households who are income eligible can apply. Applicants must live within Hanover Township and provide all required documentation at the time of the appointment. Anyone 55 or older should call 630-483-5660 to schedule an appointment. Residents under 55 should call 630-540-9085. Tribute to the music of Lennon and McCartney at ECC Jim Witter will perform songs by John Lennon and Paul McCartney in “The Long and Winding Road” concert being presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the Blizzard Theater on the Elgin Community College campus, 1700 Spartan Drive. The night will feature some of The Beatles’ greatest hits, including “Hard Day’s Night,” “Nowhere Man,” “Help!” “Hey Jude” and “Let It Be,” according to the ECC Arts Center website. During the multimedia performance, the audience will hear how some of these songs came to be and what inspired them. Tickets to the show are $42 and can be purchased at eccartscenter.org/tickets. (Chicago Tribune file photo) St. Sophia Fall Greek Food Fest set for Friday and Saturday St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Elgin will hold its Fall Greek Food Fest from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26. Hosted by St. Sophia Philoptochos, the event will feature Greek food and drinks and local vendors, according to the church’s website. All proceeds will go to hurricane relief efforts. Guests can dine in or carry out their orders. Dishes available include gyros, spanakopita, Greek chicken, pastichio, avgolemono soup, Greek salads, baklava and other dessert items. Dundee Township Park District holding dodgeball tournament Dundee Township Park District will host an inaugural dodgeball tournament from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Randall Oaks Recreation Center, 500 N. Randall Road, West Dundee. Teams of six players will battle it out for bragging rights, according to the park district’s website. Open to high school students, the entry fee is $80 per team.
