(PINPOINT WEATHER) — The tropics are mainly quiet for now and there are no threats to the Carolinas or any of the U.S. over the next 7-10 days.  This is great news for the U.S. after a rough few weeks of hurricane activity with Helene and Milton. Tropical Storm Oscar, which is bringing significant mudslides and flooding to eastern Cuba on Monday will not impact the U.S.   TRACKING THE TROPICS | Track storms and see the latest satellite imagery from the Tropics on MyFOX8.com. Oscar is forecast to shift northeast through the middle of the week and advance towards Bermuda around Thursday.   There are no other tropical waves and or disturbances to keep an eye on at the moment.  The big reason why... WIND SHEAR!  High wind shear is dominating the Atlantic basin right now. Wind shear occurs when you have a large change in wind speed or wind direction as you rise more and more into the upper atmosphere.   Wind shear prevents storms from growing tall and strong, which limits hurricane activity.   Although we are getting to that time of the season where the tropics usually settle down. We still have a month of the season left, as hurricane season does not end until November 30th.   Besides lower wind shear, tropical systems also thrive in warm and moist environments. The Atlantic basin is extremely warm and moist at the moment, so a drop in wind shear could allow the tropics to become active again.   NOAA is forecasting a 60 percent chance of La Nina emerging by the end of November. That is important when it comes to the climatology of hurricane season.   When the ocean waters are cooler in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, this leads to less storm formation there. This in turn leads to less wind shear across the Atlantic basin.   If another tropical system does form this year, the name will be Patty. There are only six names left for this hurricane season. The Greek alphabet will take over if we run out of names.   The Pinpoint Weather Team will continue to monitor the tropics through the rest of the season and provide you with the latest tropical weather updates.
