ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The NBA season tips off on Tuesday, but for Rochester native and Detroit Piston Isaiah Stewart, Monday was a grand opening that meant a whole lot more. The Isiah Stewart Learning Center officially opened on October 21st, an after-school program that provides homework support, enrichment, and hot meals for students of all ages. A $220,00 dollar donation brought back the program that Stewart himself attended as a kid. "I felt that this program played a huge role to get me to where I am today," said Stewart. "It kept me out of a lot of trouble. It helped me academically in the classroom and most importantly I was fed every day." The program is held at God's Visions Ministries on Hudson Avenue in Rochester. It's back in operation after a nearly decade-long hiatus and it came together in just a few months after a fateful conversation this summer when Stewart was back in town. Stewart was having breakfast with the program's co-founder Dr. Burnice Green Sr. Stewart asked him about the program and Dr. Green told him that it was no longer running. "You could just see a lightbulb shine in his eyes like, 'Oh wow, we can do this,'" said Dr. Green. His father Dela was proudly watching as Stewart met with the kids via Zoom, providing a positive role model to look up to. "A lot of kids here need that," said Dela Stewart. "A lot of kids here, they're strong. They just need somebody to show them the right way." "It gives them a message that they can achieve the same thing," said Dr. Green. "Isaiah worked really, really hard. It didn't just happen for Isaiah. When students see and understand how hard Isaiah worked and what it took to get to where he's at today, you can expect the same results from them. They're going to work hard, they're going to give their best efforts, and that's what we've expected from this." Stewart attended McQuaid for his first two years of high school and was a McDonald's All-American after he transferred to La Lumiere School, a prep school in Indiana. He was named Mr. Basketball USA his senior year and attended the University of Washington, getting drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the 16th overall pick in 2020. He has averaged over 10 points per game his last two years, is a strong defensive presence, and agreed to a 4-year, $64 million contract in 2023. "I take much pride in doing that because I was once a kid in their same shoes, living in some of the same environments as them," said Isaiah Stewart. "Now that I'm in a position where I'm able to give back and help, to me it's a no-brainer. I've been blessed and put in a position where I'm able to drop those same blessings upon the youth there in Rochester because I can relate. It brings so much joy and love to my heart to do so." The program is free for all of the students and runs through the end of the school year. More information can be found on the program's website.
