ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Protests erupted in Albuquerque last weekend over a deadly officer-involved shooting. At Monday night's Albuquerque City Council meeting, there was outrage from residents and councilors demanding change. Matthew "Solo" Garcia's mother spoke at the meeting and called out the police for killing her son on Friday. "He has every right to live like the rest of us. He wasn't perfect but he was a human being," said Bernadette Garcia. The operation turned chaotic when officers encountered Garcia. Officers cuffed Garcia and placed him in the back of a police cruiser and broke protocol by not searching Garcia first for a gun which is something that he had on him. "Officers were literally in a wrestling match trying to control and remove the gun from the individual when the shots were fired," said APD Chief Harold Medina on Saturday. Garcia was shot in the back of the police unit and died. A protest erupted and two people were arrested for breaking a police line and striking an officer. At Monday night's city council meeting, Chief Median addressed the shooting and called out misinformation being spread online. He also outlined the process officers need to follow when placing someone under arrest. "We are mandated to search individuals. There is an investigation into the search of this individual prior to being put into the car. And I don't want to get into details because this is an active administrative investigation. But I remind council that every single officer-involved shooting, or where force is used is fully reviewed," said Chief Medina. Councilors were outraged saying it never should have happened. "I have never seen a police officer have to shoot someone in the back seat in a vehicle that has been handcuffed," said City Councilor Louie Sanchez. Residents at the meeting also called out APD and called for structural change. "You should listen to your community and make your cops accountable and stop writing them blank checks to make them protect whatever you perceive as justice," said a resident. APD said it will release the body camera video later in its investigation.
