VOLCANO, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Keiki on Hawaii Island can skate at Volcano Skatepark once again after its initial closure more than four years ago. It closed during the COVID-19 pandemic after the structure deteriorated to the point it posed safety risks to users. Big Island police seek details for Ocean View murder investigation On Saturday, Oct. 19, community members, state officials and dedicated volunteers celebrated the official reopening with a blessing and lei untying ceremony. "We understand how valuable these skateparks are in providing our keiki with safe, fun spaces to develop their skills and stay on a positive path. This reopening is a testament to what we can achieve when the community comes together and works with us to get things done." According to officials, a Friends of the Park agreement was formed with the Volcano Skatepark Organization and Parks & Recreation for the restoration project. "The volunteers’ passion for the sport of skateboarding, combined with their knowledge of skate park construction, allowed us to join together and restore this important community asset," stated Maurice Messina, Director of Parks & Recreation. The partnership aims to continue making improvements to the structure and perform timely maintenance to ensure skaters can enjoy the park.
