Appleton, Wis. (WFRV) - In-person absentee voting begins in Wisconsin on Tuesday. This is voting that happens at a local clerk's office or at another designated location ahead of the Nov. 5 election. Each individual municipality can offer their own dates and hours for early voting, but those dates and times must be between Oct. 22 and Nov. 3. Election officials told Local 5 News that voters should contact their local clerk or visit their municipality's website. "It's going to be a very high turnout election, lots of voters going through so just be patient while everybody gets through the line," said Kami Lynch who is the clerk for the city of Appleton. In Appleton, those who want to vote early can come to the sixth floor of city hall. Voters should bring a valid photo identification like a driver's license or passport. She says residents can register to vote and then vote the same day. To register, residents will have to fill out a voter registration form and have a proof of residence document with them. "(In addition) the closer we get to the last Friday the busier it'll be." Top Democrats and Republicans have emphasized the importance of early voting to their supporters in recent campaign stops. The deadline for voters to request an absentee ballot is Oct. 31. Lynch and other election officials tell Local 5 News that they've mailed out significantly fewer absentee ballots this year compared to 2020 when a global pandemic changed people's voting habits. In Appleton, Lynch said she's mailed out about 9,000 ballots this year so far compared to about 25,000 in 2020. Packers’ Zach Tom hosts autograph signing to benefit homeless community "Absentee ballot trends are beginning to look more like pre-2020 levels although of course we're going to need to wait until after the election and after the in-person absentee voting process to find out what those numbers are and how they compare to previous elections," said Wisconsin Election Commission administrator Meagan Wolfe. For those using mail-in ballots, Lynch recommends that voters return their ballot by mail at least one week ahead of election day to make sure it gets to the clerk in time.  Some municipalities also have drop boxes for absentee ballots. Wolfe said there are fewer drop boxes in the state this election cycle compared to 2020 so check with your local clerk to see if that's an option.
