GULF SHORES, Ala. (KLFY)-- The Morgan City Shrimp and Petroleum Festival was recently in the spotlight for selling imported shrimp. The same consultant group who genetically tested the shrimp continued their investigation at the National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores and found the same situation. SeaD Consulting tested five vendors at the National Shrimp Festival that advertised to have Gulf shrimp. Of the five, only one had authentic Gulf shrimp: Rouse's Supermarket. SeaD Consulting recently found similar results for the Shrimp and Petroleum Festival in Morgan City, with only one of the five vendors sampled actually serving shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico. David Williams, owner of SeaD Consulting, said the National Shrimp Festival should have been named the "International Shrimp Festival." "We have a brand we need to protect," Williams said. "And it's not only about brand, it's a community. It's a way of life." Experts say local shrimpers' way of life is being threatened by misusing the "cachet" of Gulf-caught shrimp. "What's stopping Gulf shrimp selling is the fact that restaurants a lot of the times, deceive people into purchasing product, which is not what they expect it to be," Williams said. Erin Williams, CEO of SeaD Consulting, said when restaurants and festivals intentionally mislabel their internationally imported shrimp as shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico, they harm consumers and the industry. Erin said restaurants are notorious for even creating merchandise that categorizes them to have local shrimp, but in reality, they are lying to their customers. "If every restaurant and festival that use the imagery of our hardworking coastal communities actually use that product, our industry would not be in the state it is now," Erin said. SeaD Consulting told News 10 that they plan to visit some restaurants across the state to put them to the test next. "The people that are doing the right thing will be promoted," David said. "And the people that are doing the wrong thing...well, we will give a percentage away of restaurants in each community that are, in our opinion, serving product that is incorrectly labeled." SeaD Consulting said they want people to know that they are not trying to be negative. "What we're trying to do is positive," David said. "We want a vibrant coastal community. That's all I care about."
