The city of Aurora was recently ranked in the top 10 of best cities for creative businesses in the United States. The poll was conducted by website Creative Fabrica, and assessed the 200 most populous cities in the country for the most creative ventures set against population size. Aurora ranked sixth overall, and was the top city for makers and creativity in Illinois. The website stressed that the number of creative businesses, and businesses that support creative ventures, was compared to population size. That’s why a city like New York City ranked low on the survey – it has lots of businesses supporting creativity, but not when compared to its population size. “We looked at the 200 most populous U.S. cities to find the best places for makers and creatives to flourish,” the website said. “These vibrant hubs offer a wealth of support, from classes and workshops to inspiring businesses and fellow artists.” According to a news release from Aurora City Hall, the survey was based on the breadth of offerings, from stores to workshops to the creative scene. “Aurora does a great job of nurturing the artistic community,” said Adriana Vazquez, co-owner of Nuna Ceramics Art Studio in Aurora. The city regularly calls for local artists for large-scale murals and regular art installations at galleries downtown. There is live music at RiverEdge Park and The Venue, and downtown Aurora has three performing arts theaters run by the Aurora Civic Center Authority, and one independent community theater. It also has the Paramount School of the Arts downtown. “We like to think that all humans are artists and everything we do is creative. Aurora as a city is unique because it nurtures that and puts it at the heart of everything we do,” said Jessica Duplessis, education director at the School of the Arts. The study collected Google Business data for the 200 most populous cities in the country, utilizing a list of 90 business tags that relate to creative activities, hobbies and more.
