GEARY COUNTY (KSNT) - Officials in Geary County doused an out-of-control fire last week that caused widespread damage. Geary County Emergency Services issued a press release on Monday, Oct. 21 regarding a fire that burned 1,168 acres of land last week. The fire also destroyed 1,550 large bales of hay, a semi flatbed trailer, an unknown amount of fence posts, gates and barbed wire and a cow. Total estimated losses sit at $122,000. Local firefighters were called about the situation around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 about a large fire in the area of US-77 Highway and Skiddy West Road in southwest Geary County. Fire crews spotted flames moving quickly in a northern direction with the help of the wind, threatening nearby homes and farm structures. Firefighters brought the situation under control around 8:20 p.m. with help from several local fire agencies and state departments. Local farmers and ranchers also helped move cattle out of the path of the fire and provide additional water support. USDA looks to hire firefighters for 2025 season in Kansas Geary County Emergency Services said the area where the fire began was located but the cause is unknown. Agencies which helped put the fire out or provide backup in other ways included Marion County Fire Task, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Geary County Fire Auxiliary, the Red Cross, Woodbine Fire, White City Fire, Fort Riley Fire, Riley County Fire, Dickinson County Fire Task Force, Grandview Plaza Fire and Junction City Fire.
