RIO ARRIBA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – A more than 100-year-old church located in the community of El Guique near Ohkay Owingeh in Rio Arriba County is in need of some major repairs. La Capilla de San Raphael de El Guique is estimated to have been built in the 1800s and from time to time still hosts Catholic masses, baptisms, and events for the surrounding community. Three mayordomos of the chapel have taken on the responsibility of repairing the adobe building and have so far raised $26,000 to do it. However, they are still in need of help to cover the total cost of the repairs. And we don't want to do that. We want to conserve what our forefathers have built," said Elaine Martinez. Over the past seven years, Elaine and her husband Jimmy spent their own time and money, along with a few donations from the community, to ensure that the chapel is maintained. Annette Quintana joined their mission and created a GoFundMe campaign in April to help tackle the large repairs. "We are trying to do our roof first, just because that is the one that is the most important. And so, we decided to try and raise money just for that. And then, if there's money left over, we can also do a fence, as well as we have to put in a new gate," Quintana explained. They also would like to raise an estimated $36,000 to replace the church's fence and gate with wrought iron. The Martinezs and Quintana said they have received a lot of support from the community and would like to see the building be used for another 100 years. "Their heart just comes out when they see me because we're trying to keep it up, and their gratitude is so tremendous," Jimmy Martinez said while reflecting on his interactions with two women in their 90s who grew up attending the church. "It's part of what we grew up with. It's our faith,  and we just grew up knowing that our chapel was there when we needed it, whether it was to pray or it was, it's just something that brought everybody together," said Quintana.
