ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – People parking in downtown and Old Town Albuquerque could be seeing some new changes on the streets. City councilors are looking to have more parking enforcement and to bring in a new type of parking meter. "It allows for self-enforcement in parking spots and a parking spot that can change throughout the day," says City Councilor Joaquin Baca. It's an ordinance that could change the way people park in the streets of Albuquerque. Baca is introducing it in hopes of improving parking enforcement in the downtown area. "One of the concerns or questions that a lot of businesses had when I was working on the Renaissance bill as well as the bike lanes is parking; everybody worries about parking in Albuquerque and there was s concern that there isn't enough or its limited," Baca says. Albuquerque City Council rejects controversial downtown revitalization bill Councilor Baca says this ordinance is to help businesses that need a spot for delivery trucks or access to loading zones. He says they wouldn't permanently make parking spaces restricted but instead, have new flexibility for those spots. "So in the morning, it can be a regular parking spot or a drop-off zone or delivery zone. Afternoon, it's a regular parking spot and then in the evening, it becomes a food truck spot," he adds. The ordinance would remove restrictions within the city code that prohibit using new parking technology. "This is helping our businesses, especially our small businesses downtown, it's just making the parking a little bit more efficient, a little bit more dynamic, not just for their customers but also for their deliveries or for law enforcement for that safety aspect," Baca says. The new ordinance will be introduced Monday night in city council.
