PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — National Teen Driving Safety Week, which runs from Oct. 20 through Oct. 26, is an opportunity for parents to have an important conversation with teens about being a responsible driver on the road. According to the Virginia DMV, in 2023 there were 35,674 crashes and 87 fatalities that involved a teenage driver statewide. “Parents play a critical role in teaching teen drivers safe driving habits,” said Holly Dalby, AAA Tidewater Director of Public Affairs. “New teen drivers are gaining experience behind the wheel, which increases the chance of dangerous situations for the teen and other roadway users around them,” she said. “This is why it’s so important for parents to model safe driving behaviors themselves and have discussions with their teens about the choices they make to keep everyone on the road safe. Start the conversation today and continue it every day.” By having a conversation about safe driving, parents can talk about what kind of car is age appropriate for your teen. Brian Moody with Kelly Blue Book tells 10 On Your Side there are several kinds of vehicles new drivers should stay away from. "You don't want to give your kid some high powered car, a large truck that sits high off the ground," he explained. "They don't have the experience for that." Moody also recommends first time drivers stay away from electric vehicles because of the high torque they have when speeding up and their charging reliability. Choosing a vehicle that has a high crash test score could save your child’s life, but so could a conversation about safe driving. Be sure to talk with your teen about not using their phones on the road, and to ensure they always communicate where they’re going in case something happens. During National Teen Driving Safety Week, multiple organizations are releasing their top tips on driving for teens.
