HONOLULU (KHON2) -- As the 2024 presidential election gets closer and as more civil rights are stripped in various states across the United States, a new survey shows that politics play a bigger role in where people choose to live than many had expected. The survey found that approximately 1 in 4 Americans -- the survey found it to be 23% -- have said that local and national politics are very important in their decision about where to settle down and invest. The survey also revealed that nearly 1 in 5 Americans, or 17%, have thought about moving away from their current home because their political beliefs don’t match those of most people in their area. The survey breaks down like this: 32% of those who identify as Millennials believe that it is very or extremely important to live in a place in which most people share their political views. Generation X came in at 23% on this one. While Generation Z is at 22% and Baby Boomers at 16% 33% and 31% of those who identify as Millennials said they are very or extremely influenced by national or local politics, respectively, in choosing where it is safest to live. Generation Z came in at 25% and 27% respectively. With Generation X coming in at 21% for both local and national and Baby Boomers at 16% and 14% respectively. 28% of those who identify as Millennials said they have considered moving away from where they currently live because their political views don't align with the majority of people where they live. Generation Z came in at 20%. While Generation X came in at 14% and Baby Boomers at 10%. But these concerns cut across the generational divide when we look at ideology. 29% of those who identify as liberal believe that the influence of local politics on the choice of where they live is extremely/very influential. Those who identify as moderate came in at 17% and those who identify as conservative at 26%. Adults, in general, come in at 23% once the totals are averaged. 30% of those who identify as liberal believe that the influence of national politics on the choice of where they live is extremely/very influential. Those who identify as moderate came in at 18% and those who identify as conservative at 27%. Adults, in general, come in at 23% once the totals are averaged. And sharing those ideologies with your neighbors is also important: 34% of those who identify as liberal believe that it is extremely/very important to live in a place in which most people share their political views. Moderates came in at 15% and Conservatives at 27%. Adults, in general, come in at 23% once the totals are averaged. So, of course, this lack of safety is pushing people to consider moving: 24% of those who identify as liberal have contemplated moving to a safer place where people share their political views. Moderates came in at 15% and Conservatives at 17%. Adults, in general, come in at 17% once the totals are averaged. The survey found these numbers reveal that frequent voters are more likely to be influenced by politics in their decisions of where to live, and they are more likely to feel their views align with the majority of the people where they live. Meanwhile, there is an estimated 48% of self-identified frequent voters who feel their political views align with the majority of people where they live. This is compared to 30% of occasional voters and 18% of inactive voters. "Choosing where to live is often a complex decision and for many Americans, especially millennials, local and national politics are factors that influence where they live. With both local and national politicians making decisions that impact daily life, both socially and fiscally, it makes sense that many would prefer to live in areas where the politics align with their own beliefs. Some go so far as to consider moving to find that alignment." -- Danielle Hale, Chief Economist, Realtor.com® Many people care a lot about living in a place where they feel safe; and others share similar views on important issues that impact civil liberties, personal freedoms and personal expression. This survey highlights how important politics can be in people's lives, not just during elections but also in everyday decisions, like where to live. Many want to be in communities where they feel comfortable and understood, especially when it comes to their beliefs about government and society.
