GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — People who live around Bingham Park are calling for a full remediation of the park after it closed in April 2024. Its closure came as tests done by the city came back with high levels of toxins in the soil.  Cheryl Johnson has been walking around her neighborhood every day for a week to get signatures for a petition stating residents want Bingham Park fully remediated for the community to use again.  The land was previously used as a waste incinerator and trash dump before becoming a park in the 70s.  Bingham Park has been closed for six months because the soil has been found to have toxins in it. Now, Johnson and other community members will have the chance to speak before the city council is expected to decide between two proposals to address the issue.  Proposal A calls for containment and cover. Proposal B calls for full remediation  “We thought that a solution was going to happen. They were trying to get White Street to be one of those options for where the soil would go. That’s off the table now, but we still want this remediation to happen,” Johnson said. Containment and cover is the least expensive of the two and cosst $12.4 million. The price tag for full remediation is $39 million. Johnson says the city doesn’t have that. No matter what, she wants to figure it out.  “We need a place to thrive and survive ... This is our lives, our health,” Johnson said. Henry Massey can’t make the city council meeting, but his voice will still be heard. “It’s been pushed down the road now for 70 years. If we don’t fix it now and fix it right, it just leaves the problem for the next generation," Massey said. Residents have hope for the park and its potential to flourish. “Sooner means that the community actually gets some use out of the property. Later means that it is off limits,” Massey said. “Full remediation means ... places for people to cookout, for families to go play basketball if they want to go outside and play basketball,” Johnson said. The community group has gotten 100 signatures. They hope it is enough to convince city leaders to pay for full remediation.  The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
