NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — A 45-year-old man from Grand Forks has been sentenced after endangering law enforcement during multiple altercations between 2023 and 2024. According to the United States Attorney's Office, on September 15, 2023, Michael Otto was stopped by law enforcement for a routine traffic stop — after which he led officers on a high-speed chase. When officers eventually stopped Otto, they found two stolen firearms in his vehicle. In July of 2024, a warrant was issued for Otto for violating the terms of his pretrial release. While officers attempted to take him into custody, Otto rammed his vehicle into both a Grand Forks Police Department vehicle and an FBI vehicle occupied by two FBI agents. GoFundMe created after loss of Minot home and daycare “This defendant endangered the safety of federal and local law enforcement officers all while violating the court-imposed terms of his pretrial release,” U.S. Attorney Mac Schneider said. “Today’s strong sentence is therefore a fair one. The United States Attorney’s Office is committed to keeping our communities safe, and that means aggressively prosecuting assaults on agents and officers in every instance where we have jurisdiction.” Otto has been charged with both Possession of Stolen Firearms and Assaulting a Federal Agent. He has been sentenced to 13 years in federal prison followed by 3 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $175.00 in Special Assessments, and $2,713.72 in restitution for damaged vehicles.
