BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- An investigation is underway into Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez after accusations that she used county resources for political purposes. Supervisor Perez claimed she's being unfairly targeted by Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer during an explosive moment in Monday's special board meeting. "On Friday Oct. 18 at approximately 9 a.m., investigators from the District Attorneys office attempted to make entry to my office when no one was present. They did not have permission, they did not provide notice to us, and they did not have a warrant. Because the office was empty and locked, they attempted to have the CAO [Chief Administrative Officer] give them access, illegally, to my office. They had cameras, there was no one in the office, I don't know what they we're intending to do, or what they were intending to photocopy," Perez said at the special supervisor's meeting. "The district attorney responded to my text message when I told her she needed a warrant saying 'Thank you, I will pass the message on.' I'm not sure who she's sending the message on to, or who's in charge of that office, because I informed her the message was actually for her." Perez said she's contacted federal authorities as well as California Attorney General Rob Bonta, calling the DA's "Gestapo"-like tactics illegal, immoral and unethical. Perez later walked out of the meeting, saying her office was being raided by investigators. 17 News has confirmed with Perez that a warrant has been issued and investigators took pictures of her office. The District Attorney's Office released a statement Monday afternoon saying it would not comment further "about the nature or focus of this pending investigation." The statement also said voluntary consent from someone authorized to give it is a commonly used and widely accepted practice for investigators to ask for access before investigators enter for a search. If voluntary consent is not given, investigators will then seek a warrant to enter and search a property. KGET's Jenny Huh and Connor Dore will provide coverage on this incident. Read the District Attorney's Office full statement below: On Monday, October 21, 2024, Leticia Perez, a member of the Kern County Board of Supervisors, announced at a meeting of the Board that investigators with the Kern County District Attorney's Office had sought consent to enter and photograph portions of the Kern County Administrative Building, including specifically areas currently in use by Supervisor Perez and/or her staff. Requesting consent by persons authorized to grant it prior to engaging in a search is a commonly used and widely accepted practice for investigators. Voluntary consent from authorized persons to allow a search has long been recognized by the United States Supreme Court as an exception to search warrant requirements. It is common for investigators to request to conduct searches as part of a pending investigation. When parties with access to information or evidence relevant to a criminal investigation decline to voluntarily consent to a search, the next step in an investigation is often to see judicial authorization to conduct the search. Such judicial authorization takes the form of a search warrant, which, when properly based on probable cause and approved by a judge, gives investigators the authority to conduct a search even when a party or parties decline to voluntarily consent to a search. The Public Integrity Unit of the District Attorney's Office investigates potential criminal violations, including those related to elected officials. The Public Integrity Unit will continue to use lawful investigative avenues and tools to ensure that relevant evidence of potential violations is obtained and secured. The District Attorney's Office declines to comment further about the nature or focus of this pending investigation. Statement from the Kern County District Attorney's Office.
