The Chicago Cubs largely avoided serious injuries to their position players over the course of the season. However, second baseman Nico Hoerner underwent right flexor tendon surgery on Oct. 11, the Cubs announced Monday. Dr. Keith Meister performed the procedure on his forearm. There is currently no timeline for his recovery. Hoerner will be focused on rehabbing, and the Cubs will determine his progress when he reports to Mesa, Ariz., for spring training before the team decides on the next steps. Hoerner had been playing through the ailment for a while, but the extent of the issue wasn’t known during the season. Hoerner, 27, just completed the first year of a three-year, $35 million contract extension he signed last March. He appeared in a career-high 151 games, missing six games in mid-May with left hamstring tightness and sidelined two games in July after sustaining a small fracture in his right hand after getting hit by a pitch.
