SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Historic Hotels of America has released its 2024 list of the Most Haunted Hotels of America, and two New Mexico spots made the cut. According to the list, La Posada de Santa Fe and La Fonda in Santa Fe are some of the country's most haunted hotels.
Built in 1882, La Posada de Santa Fe is said to be haunted by the original owner's late wife, Julia Staab. Guests and staff have reported seeing her apparition in Room 101, named Julia's Suite, and in the Rose Room on the ground floor. "The hotel embraces its haunted reputation, offering history tours that include tales of Julia Staab and other ghostly encounters," says Historic Hotels of America's website. It adds, "La Posada de Santa Fe stands today as a testament to Santa Fe's rich cultural tapestry, blending historical elegance with an intriguing paranormal legacy."

La Fonda on the Plaza is located in the heart of Santa Fe and embraces its reputation of being haunted, even offering a ghost tour package. According to Historic Hotels of America, several ghosts have been reportedly seen at the hotel, including former Chief Justice of the New Mexico Territorial Supreme Court John P. Slough, who was shot and killed in 1867. Visitors have also reported seeing the ghosts of a distraught salesman and murdered bride. Historic Hotels of America says, "After dark, Santa Fe, New Mexico, promises to enchant visitors with its paranormal legends and ghost stories from its 400-year history, and La Fonda offers guests a first-hand look at the myths surrounding Santa Fe Plaza."

The list is made up of "places where generations of staff and guests pass along the tales of spectral Revolutionary War soldiers, the smoky silhouettes of U.S. presidents, the melancholy spirits of tragic would-be brides, unexplained footsteps, as well as friendly phantom bellhops and engineers," according to Historic Hotels of America.
