The 3rd Avenue storefront. | Candice Woo Tuetano Taqueria reopens next to Mujer Divina After departing the Old Town Urban Market last fall, chef Priscilla Curiel has reopened Tuetano Taqueria in a stand-alone storefront along downtown Chula Vista’s dynamic Third Avenue. Honored by the Michelin Guide in 2020, the taqueria first became a sensation in San Ysidro where the small shop earned fans on both sides of the border and helped kickstart the birria boom that’s since swept across San Diego. It re-emerges next to the second location of Mujer Divina, Curiel’s National City cafe which turns out specialty coffee drinks like churro lattes and Mexican mochas along with supremely snackable slender burritos filled with potatoes and chorizo or machaca made from a long-held family recipe. Curiel’s father opened Talavera Azul, a nearby hotspot for Mexican breakfast, back in 2008 and still has a stake in La Espadaña, a popular all-day restaurant in Tijuana. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the fast-casual taqueria revolves around the chef’s sought-after beef birria, slow-braised for 30 hours with a mix of spices and aromatics that include cinnamon, cloves, guajillo chiles. The compact menu features quesabirria tacos, birria tortas, and quesadillas as well as rotating seasonal aguas frescas and sides like consome and Curiel’s signature tuetano aka bone marrow, which can be eaten on its own or scooped onto tacos. With her cafe and taco shop already doing bustling business, Curiel is planning to open a third restaurant next to Tuetano Taqueria. The chef tells Eater that Mujer Divina Brunch House, a sit-down spot for Mexican and American breakfast dishes, should be up and running by January 2025.
