LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Following a weekend of tragic shootings, a local organization is stepping in to provide aid and resources to the community. Officials emphasize that despite a recent decline in homicides, significant change is still needed as gun violence continues to impact the area. “We hear about it, we see it on the news but it’s still kind of distant from us, if we’re not the victims, if we’re not the families affected,” said ONE Lexington Crisis Response Coordinator, Kenneth Payne. “When you hear the cries of someone who just found out, that they lost a loved one, or they just found out that a family member has been shot, it kind of makes it real to you,” said Payne. On Friday morning, police reported that a child was shot and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. ONE Lexington told ABC 36 they plan on meeting with the child and his family to offer support. “We’ll be going to see that family and that young boy as his birthday, we don’t have an exact date, but it’s close, his birthday is close. So going to support him and show some love to him and his family and also let him know that we’re there,” said Payne. The situation worsened over the weekend, with police detailing a shooting on East 5th Street that left one person dead on Saturday night. The following morning, authorities reported three additional injuries from a shooting off Versailles Road. The weekend’s fatal incident marks Lexington’s 16th homicide, six less than about this time last year. One Lexington said that regardless of the statistics, the community needs ongoing support. “Sometimes we like to talk about it, talk about what’s going on, talk about how bad it may be, how good it may be, how the numbers may go up, how the numbers may be declining. But what are we going to do as a community as a people, and just a good neighbor,” said Payne. ONE Lexington will be at the East end area this Wednesday at 6 p.m. to offer resources, including free mental health support, youth mentoring, and support groups.
