MADISON COUNTY, Ind. — A Madison County man is accused of using discreetly hidden cameras to capture intimate footage of his ex-wife, his girlfriend and a teenage girl. Nicholas H. Peterson, 31, of Lapel was taken into custody on Oct. 18 after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He is charged with two counts of voyeurism, a Level 6 felony; one count of child exploitation, a Level 5 felony; and one count of possession of child pornography, a Level 6 felony. Nicholas Peterson (Madison County Jail) According to court documents, Peterson is accused of spying on his victims with hidden cameras and accumulating hours and hours worth of intimate footage that includes his victims in various states of undress — along with recordings of them engaging in sex acts. It was Peterson's girlfriend who uncovered his misdeeds, spotting a nude image of his ex-wife one day while he was scrolling through his photo library on his phone. After gaining access to his phone, she uncovered the scope of his lewd spying scheme and informed police along with Peterson's ex-wife. Court documents reveal that Peterson's ex-wife located seven hidden cameras in her home after being informed about the secret surveillance. Some of the cameras were disguised as smoke detectors, another as a portable speaker and one as a tabletop USB hub. A camera was even found hidden inside her bathroom exhaust fan. Hidden cameras were also found in the home where Peterson's then-girlfriend lived, including in the bedroom of a teenage girl. But police learned that Peterson didn't buy the cameras until well after his 2021 divorce. Court documents reveal a year-long investigation into the footage as police filed for search warrants and located secure folders on his phone. Thousands of videos and images were uncovered during the investigation including multiple videos of Peterson's ex-wife being intimate with her boyfriend. Also uncovered were nude images and videos of the underage girl along with intimate videos of Peterson's then-girlfriend. If convicted, Peterson could face up to six years in prison on a Level 5 felony.
