CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - Some new details were released Monday morning regarding the arrest of a former University of South Carolina athlete. School volunteer & former USC athlete faces attempted murder charges Around 2 p.m. on Friday, deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a disturbance involving a weapon at a bank on Folly Road. Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man matching the suspect’s description reaching into a vehicle. According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies gave loud commands for the man to step away from the vehicle, which he did. The man was detained without incident and later identified as 48-year-old Preston Vinson of Johns Island. According to Vinson, he had been involved in a verbal argument with an acquaintance that escalated into a physical confrontation in the bank parking lot. The acquaintance stated that the argument, which stemmed from a business transaction, led Vinson to point a firearm at him and threaten his life. Bill Nixon, Vinson's attorney, shared a statement following Vinson’s release from jail saying, “Mr. Vinson was in a place where he had a lawful right to be, was assaulted and was not the aggressor, and exercised his right to stand his ground in self-defense. He looks forward to clearing his name and will trust the judicial process.” Vinson was taken into custody and transported to the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center, where he was booked on charges of attempted murder, pointing and presenting a firearm, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. According to online records, Vinson was released on a $105,000 bond at 4:24 p.m. on Saturday.
