Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images The opening betting lines for Week 8 have been released and the Detroit Lions opening line is the highest it’s been in 7 years. After two consecutive road games, the Detroit Lions (5-1) will return home in Week 8 and host the Tennessee Titans (1-5) at Ford Field. These two teams are headed in opposite directions and the good folks over at FanDuel Sportsbook have set the opening betting line at Lions -10.5 points. This is the highest opening line favoring the Lions in the past seven years, back when the Lions were favored by the same amount over a Browns team that would eventually go 0-16 (2017). The Lions are arguably coming off their best win of the season, defeating the previously unbeaten Minnesota Vikings. This performance put the Lions 1-0 in the division, atop not only the NFC North but the entire NFC. The Titans have had a challenging start to 2024. They opened the season with losses to the Bears, Jets, and Packers, before securing a win over a Tua Tagovailoa-less Dolphins in Week 4. Unfortunately, the Colts beat them the following week, and they’re currently coming off a loss to the Bills. The Titans' 1-5 start to the season is their worst in a decade (since 2015 when they went 1-6 to open the year). The Titans quarterback play has been an adventure this season. Starter Will Levis has started five games this season, but has only thrown for over 200 passing yards once, and he has not led the Titans offense to more than 17 points scored. In Week 4, Levis threw four passes, completing the first three but the final pass was an interception where he injured his shoulder and exited the game. Backup quarterback Mason Rudolph took over and led the Titans to seven scoring drives (two touchdowns and five field goals) for a 31-12 win. The following week, Levis returned to face the Colts, playing every snap in the loss, and throwing fewer than 100 passing yards. This week against the Bills, Levis was declared inactive due to the shoulder injury he suffered against the Dolphins, and Rudolph was given the starting nod. Coaches insisted that Levis was indeed injured, and they didn’t make the move to Rudolph because he led them to their only victory. Rudolph and the Titans opened with a 10-0 lead over the Bills and then gave up 34 unanswered points, unable to muster any momentum on offense. “We went backwards on offense. We had penalties, we had a million issues, quarterback hits, all those things. Not good enough,” Titans coach Brian Callahan said after the game. “We didn’t do a good enough job to do anything in the second half worthwhile. It’s frustrating. Got to find an answer.” It’ll be tough for the Titans to find any answers in Detroit, as the Lions are one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now. Quarterback Jared Goff is coming off his third straight game with at least 280 yards passing, with two passing touchdowns, and a passer rating over 140.0. They match up well with every defense and have scored at least 20 points in five out of their six games, including scoring at least 31 points in each of their last three. The Lions offense is simply a juggernaut right now and a double-digit opening line is not as surprising as one might think.
