FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Members with the Westboro Baptist Church are planning to speak outside of two Fresno County high schools next week. The group is known for its anti-gay beliefs. Its members also travel across the country to carry out protests at military funerals, in front of holocaust museums and other locations in order to spread their ideologies.  The church said it did not schedule the events with officials on campus but did release a statement about its plans:  "We warn against proud sin as God the creator of all requires that we fear and obey Him. We do what we have been doing on the streets of this nation for going on 34 years. If students come up to us and ask us questions, we will be happy to answer them." The church's members will be at Roosevelt High School on Oct. 28 and Reedley High School on Oct. 31. Westboro Baptist Church to speak outside schools in Fresno, Reedley In response, LGBTQ Fresno and other valley organizations are planning counter-protests to coincide with the church's events. Jason Scott with LGBTQ Fresno emphasized that the protests will be peaceful. "We've decided to have a loving and inclusive response to the Westboro Baptist Church coming to our community," he said. "We think that it's important to show how respectful and loving people in that in our community are and we want to stand up against the hatred that they're trying to bring into our city." He said a few community members have voiced their concerns. "What they have shown in the past is that they have very hurtful and derogatory signage and things that they say," Scott noted. "We've heard from parents and educators at the school sites that are concerned about this event happening and how it's going to affect themselves and their students." LGBTQ Fresno will be among several organizations planning to counter-protest. Scott expects hundreds of people to attend.  "We are planning to come out with rainbow umbrellas to try to be out in front of this. So, the kids are not exposed to the hatred, the divisiveness that's going to be shown to them. We've gotten a lot of groups, not just the LGBTQ community, but women's groups, liberal progressive groups," he explained. "It is the group's First Amendment right to come out there. But it's also our right to be out there and show that they don't speak for the majority." For updates leading up to the protests, Scott said you can visit the organization's website.  Kings Canyon and Fresno Unified School Districts have released statements about security surrounding the church's planned visits.  Both school districts said they are focused on working with officials and police in order to ensure the safety of students and staff.
