“We are on the brink of an irreversible climate disaster.” That is the first line of the recently released 2024 State of the Climate Report: “Perilous times on planet Earth,” academic.oup.com/bioscience/advance-article/doi/10.1093/biosci/biae087/7808595?login=falseThe authors of this report advise us to become politically active and support leaders who understand climate change and will answer the call to action to avoid every fraction of a degree of warming and save countless lives.  Megan McKenna running for Summit County Council Seat C is one such leader. Megan McKenna grew up and stayed in Summit County to teach and work on low-income and affordable housing.  She’ll support policies that would help to make our communities places where our public employees and workers can afford to live. Other candidates futilely oppose new development. Meanwhile, our current policies continue to lead to more traffic and sprawl. Megan recognizes that we need to have as much input as possible in a bad situation — the one where our state Legislature will override Summit County’s land use plans so that developers can cash in on our open space. As a rider of transit and a cyclist, Megan is the only council candidate who truly understands the challenges of using transit and active transportation. Megan will look for solutions to get cars off the road and not add more commuters. Our youth deserve a chance to live in a world that is not devastated by climate change. As an educator who taught AP Environmental Science and was the adviser to the Earth Club, Megan helped students gain the knowledge to have an impact on the policies that will affect their lives. We can try putting up a wall to keep out more development, but even so, we will be coughing from the wildfire smoke drifting over us. Please vote for Megan McKenna for Summit County Council Seat C so that our community can be part of the solution!Joan EntwisltePark CityThe post Best for climate appeared first on Park Record.
