OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Recent shootings across the metro have pushed the homicide count for this year to 70, five fewer than last year and it's only October. Oklahoma City police say these numbers fluctuate year to year and that it's important to note, not all homicides are gun-related. New data from police shows in 2023, there were 66 shooting deaths. As of this past week, so far this year the number is 65. "I feel like there is this idea that everybody is shooting, that, you know, everywhere you go, there's just people with guns and you might get shot, but the reality is that there's a small group of people who are involved in this type of gun violence," said Jabee Williams, executive director, LiveFree OKC. Williams believes intervention can help reduce gun violence and that it's more than just getting rid of the firearms. "We always say that if you take the gun out of somebodies hand, you've got to be ready to put something else in it... What is that need that needs to be met that isn't being met that is causing them to be at the highest risk of being involved in gun violence," said Williams. LiveFree OKC focuses on intervention only in Northeast OKC and since the launch of their program last year, homicides decreased on that side of town. LiveFree OKC says it needs funding to send resources into the city to intervene before it turns to gun violence. Mayor David Holt and other city leaders have been working with the nonprofit to reach a point to where they can expand.
