LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – At Keeneland, military and first responders were honored on Sunday for ‘Heroes Day’. Active military and veterans, first responders, police officers, fire fighters and healthcare workers were able to enjoy a free day at the race track. There was something for everyone to enjoy. Kara Heissenbuttel, the Senior director or  community relations for Keeneland, spoke about what it means to host an event like this year. “You know here at Keeneland we employ a lot of veterans,” said Heissenbuttel.  “Folks who are retired from both the military, police and fire, former healthcare workers who are here with us. So, it’s just a sense of pride for everybody to be able to say thank you and recognize those folks and the sacrifices that they make.” Heissenbuttel says over a thousand heroes came out on Sunday to enjoy the races and some free food from City BBQ. At 3, the Henry Clay JROTC unveiled a flag on the race track. The crowd was able to sing along with Dr. Everett McCorvey to ‘God Bless America’.
