CHAVES COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) -- Intense flooding hit Chaves County on Saturday, leaving residents trapped or stuck. The New Mexico National Guard deployed help to the area, announcing they had rescued 309 people since the flooding began. They also stated that 38 people were hospitalized. “We feel for the New Mexicans affected by this latest flooding in our state,” said Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, the NM National Guard’s Adjutant General.  “Because of the previous flooding in Ruidoso, we have the experience, and we’re ready for this. We’ve worked all night, and continue to work with swift water rescue teams and other partner agencies to help our fellow citizens get to safety.” Authorities stated motorists were becoming stranded, and some were awaiting rescue on top of their vehicles. Two deaths were reported, and search-and-rescue efforts are underway. Officials have closed all city facilities and a shelter has been established at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds (2500 SE Main Street).
