PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- The University of Maryland (UMD) Police Department said dozens of scooters have been stolen in the last couple of weeks at the University. UMD police said they have seen a rapid increase in theft, specifically, theft of e-scooters. Since September 1, UMD police said they have received over 70 reports of e-scooter thefts across different areas of the campus. Annual Turkish festival kicks off in DC UMD police said there are some steps you can take to make sure your e-scooter is safe: • Double check that your e-scooter is locked. • Don't use a cable or chain to lock your e-scooter, instead use a U-type of lock. • Find the most secure spot on your e-scooter to run your lock through. • Lock your e-scooter to a bike rack, instead of a handrail, pole or parking post. If you see suspicious activity, you should contact police immediately by calling 911 or calling this number: 301-405-3333.
