BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana State Police are investigating a crash in St. Helena Parish that left one dead. Troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 16 near LA Hwy 449 around 2:40 a.m. Sunday. LSP said Carey S. Austin, 33, was driving a 2008 Ford F-150 when it veered off the right side of the road and hit a tree. According to state police, Austin was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A restrained passenger was critically injured and taken to the hospital. A routine toxicology sample was taken from Austin for testing, LSP said. "Louisiana law requires that every person inside a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions like these can often mean the difference between life and death," state police said.
