It was another unusual week for the Jets. But entering their seventh game of the season with a 2-4 record, the stakes are at an all-time high for Gang Green. Following a three-game losing streak, the Jets will travel to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers (4-2) on Sunday Night Football with a new weapon in their receiving corps. On Tuesday, following an ugly 23-20 loss to the Bills, the Jets acquired Davante Adams in a trade with the Raiders. Adams is now reunited with Aaron Rodgers, who he played with in Green Bay for eight seasons (2014-21). “It’s great being able to be with my guy and spend time with him every day,” Adams said about coming to the Jets and teaming up with Rodgers again. “It’s something that I put a lot of value on. Having him as my quarterback again, he is part of why I am who I am and why I turned into the player. “It is good to be around him and be around the guys.” The Jets acquired Adams hoping to improve their inconsistent offense. They rank 22nd in offensive yards (304.3) and are tied for 23rd in points per game (18.8). From the moment Rodgers became a Jet in 2023, the organization’s expectations changed. The Jets went from being considered a laughing stock to being expected to make the playoffs and contend for Super Bowl titles. Rodgers’ Achilles injury last season put a kink in the Jets’ plans for a year. However, the 2024 season also hasn’t gone the way Gang Green planned. The Jets’ offense has been bad, which was a key reason owner Woody Johnson fired coach Robert Saleh on Nov. 8. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich took over as interim coach. While the offense was improved, the end results remained the same in Ulbrich’s first game as coach. Despite outgaining the Bills 393-359, the Jets lost on Monday Night Football. Mistakes and a lack of discipline cost the Jets the victory. They hope the addition of Adams can jumpstart a team that is under intense pressure to win. “I’m excited about it,” Jets tight end Tyler Conklin told the Daily News. “Anytime you can get a player of his caliber and someone that talented, having him and Garrett [Wilson], two wide receiver ones, it is going to be a lot of tough matchups for defenses.” Adams will likely help a Jets offense that finished 1-for-4 on red zone opportunities in the loss against the Bills. He will also help take a lot of pressure off Wilson, who has had defenses key on him this season. However, with the addition of Adams, Mike Williams could be phased out of the Jets’ offense even more. Williams has played sparingly this season and he played 51% of the snaps against the Bills. The Jets signed Williams to a one-year contract in March despite the veteran coming off an ACL injury last season. Williams is still not 100% healthy, which is why the Jets had him on a snap count early this year. He has just 10 catches for 145 yards in six games. Williams is expected to play against the Steelers, although he missed practice this week for “personal” reasons. Rodgers criticized Williams after he threw an interception to end the game against the Bills, but the two seem to have put it behind them. “We all watch film, we all go through it and make the corrections,” Williams said. “So let’s go play football.” The Jets’ offensive line will have a challenging task keeping Rodgers clean in the pocket and attempting to contain Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt, one of the best players in the league. Rodgers has been dealing with a sore knee and a low ankle sprain for the last two weeks. He has been sacked 11 times and hit 30 in the Jets’ three consecutive losses. “He’s a game wrecker, as we all know,” Ulbrich said about Watt. “He’s one of the best players, one of the best defensive players in this league and he’s a generational talent. So, you’ve got to account for him every single play.” Gang Green has fired its coach and changed offensive play-callers from Nathaniel Hackett to passing game coordinator Todd Downing. Now, the Jets are in as close to a must-win game in October as a team can get. Since 1990, only 11 teams that began the season 2-5 have made the playoffs (6.7%). The 2023 Packers were the last team to do it, and they even won a playoff game after defeating the Cowboys in the wild-card round. Although 2-5 certainly wouldn’t be a death sentence for the Jets, it’s a tough hole to climb out of with 10 games left to play. “We definitely doing everything we can to turn it around,” Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner said. “But it starts with this whole week and having the right preparation, the right attention to detail. “We definitely know where things stand right now, we definitely know everything is still in front of us too. Especially with the edition of Davante. So, we are looking forward to it.” It appears the Jets defense will face quarterback Russell Wilson this weekend after Steelers coach Mike Tomlin declared him healthy enough to be “in consideration” to start Sunday’s game. Wilson has been dealing with a calf injury since the start of the season and Justin Fields has been under center in his place. Fields has helped lead the Steelers to a strong start. “Both are great players,” Jets linebackers coach Mike Rutenberg said. “Both have been dynamic obviously. Justin’s [Fields] done a great job this year in his role. Russell [Wilson], his career speaks for itself. We go to be ready for both.”
