Heavy rain and severe thunderstorms are ongoing across New Mexico today. Storms continue to intensify through the evening. Rain has been constant across New Mexico today. These storms began last night as the fall Low Pressure System settled itself over north central Arizona. The metro saw scattered showers earlier today. More rain could be coming to central New Mexico later this evening. The heaviest rainfall is over eastern New Mexico. A band of rain is stretching from Raton to the southern most border of the state. Severe thunderstorms are forming along this band. The majority of the severe thunderstorm warnings expire between 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. MDT on October 19th. It is possible for more severe thunderstorms to form throughout the evening. The main threats associated with these storms are heavy rain, damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes. The threat of tornadoes is low, but still possible. The rain over eastern New Mexico will not be letting up tonight. Las Vegas and Raton have already seen over 2 inches of rain. Las Vegas is nearing the 3 inch mark. Burn scar flooding is a continuing possibility for the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon Burn Scar. Looking ahead into Sunday, the rain will continue to pull further east. A flood watch is in place for a large portion of eastern New Mexico through the morning of Sunday October 20th. New Mexico saw one of its first snowfalls of the season last night and this morning. Western New Mexico near I-40 had measurable snowfall. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains also saw measurable snowfall. Red River even had flurries continue through the afternoon. More snow is expected in the Northern Mountains through Sunday. Upward of 12" may be seen at the northern most elevations. The low pressure providing the heavy rain and severe storms begins making its way over the four corners on Monday before dissipating as high pressure takes over. The state will remain dry next week as temperatures once again warm up.
