Saturday at Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park, Turk earned the consolation prize of two titles when he out-kicked Zavaleta 14:23.9 to 14:33.9 in the Jeff Swigart sweepstakes race. Both runners had faster times in the race last year. “Last year I was trying to go for a PR to win it,” Turk said. “Maximo is a really great runner, really smart. What he did (last year) was sit on my hip, which is a pretty good strategy, which is why he was able to overtake me. This year, I tried to take his own trick and use it against him.” Zavaleta did lead his team to a sweepstakes team title with 54 points, to edge out Ayala (73) and Riverside Poly (82). King had four finishers in the top 10. “Last year, there wasn’t much expectation for me,” Zavaleta said. “I hung back, then went for it. This year, I tried to do the same, because I don’t really like to push it. You could tell it was a tactical race by the times we came in for the first mile and the second mile. The last 1200, he just separated from me on the grass. He played that very well.” Turk and Zavaleta were virtually tied after two miles, but Turk ran a 4:35.3 to a 4:45.5 for Zavaleta. It was the second straight year King won the boys team title and the fourth straight year a Riverside County school won the boys team title in the event, which includes only schools from Riverside and San Bernardino counties and dates back to 2001. King became the fifth school to repeat as boys champions, joining Don Lugo (2003-04), Rancho Cucamonga (2009-11), Roosevelt (2016-17) and Santiago (2021-22). But I passed up a few guys on mile three and I’m proud of that.” Caganap said he believes he learned something about the course, which is fairly flat but has a variety of surfaces, including grass, dirt and pavement. “I know that it’s not an easy course to run. The terrain is difficult and I’ll take that into consideration next year,” Caganap said.
