The Brown women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with Columbia on Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field. “I thought we played really well,” head coach Kia McNeill said. “Columbia’s first in the conference right now, they’re very organized, well coached and have a lot of seniors on their team so I thought we played really well and were able to execute our game plan. Our press worked really well and I thought we were able to turn them over in key moments of the game, I wish we could’ve done a little bit better when we won the ball and tried to capitalize on it but all I thought it was a good game by both sides.” Brown opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Ella Weil tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the season.Weil’s goal came off of a rebound opportunity after Layla Shell fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box that hit the crossbar, Weil followed up with the rebound as the ball crossed the goal line to give Brown a 1-0 lead. In the first half, Columbia out shot Brown 5-4 as Bella Schopp stopped both shots that were on target but the Bears took a 1-0 lead into the second half. Columbia leveled the game at one in the 66th minute as Sophia Cavaliere was able to find the back of the net on a breakaway goal for the Lions. Brown had a chance to take the lead in the 76th minute off of a corner kick as the ball popped out of the 18-yard box to Lexi Quinn, the senior fired a shot that narrowly missed the net. Nadja Meite gave Brown another chance to grab a 2-1 lead as she fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box that was stopped by the Columbia goalkeeper. The Bears generated two corner kick opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the contest but were unable to find the back of the net as the game ended knotted at one. Brown moves to 5-0-2 at Stevenson-Pincince Field this season. The Bears are 2-1-2 in Ivy League Play and currently sit third in the Ivy League with eight points with two games remaining in the regular season. “The team knows what we’re playing for,” McNeill added. We want to make the Ivy League Tournament and ideally make it into the NCAA Tournament so we want to keep getting better every game and keep building on our performances, I think our end goal in what we want to achieve as a team is driving our momentum right now.” Brown will play its final home game of the regular season when they welcome Cornell to Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday, Oct. 26, kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on ESPN+. Prior to the contest, Brown will honor its six seniors.
