COLUMBIA, S.C. – Shatarius Williams caught a 17-yard touchdown pass in overtime as the Benedict College Tigers defeated rival Allen University 34-27 on Saturday night at Westwood High School in a SIAC showdown. Benedict had the ball on offense first in overtime, and needed just two plays to put the ball in the end zone. Allen had its chance on offense, and Yellow Jackets running back Fabian Duncan was stopped for a three-yard loss on third-and-one at the Benedict 2-yard line by Ty’Metrius Patterson. A fourth down pass was incomplete, sealing Benedict’s fourth straight win over their next-door neighbor. Allen kicked a 37-yard field goal with 5:39 left in the game to take a 27-20 lead. Benedict tied the game on a 20-yard pass from Charles “Tre” Simmons to Zach Gibson with 2:26 remaining. The Yellow Jackets took the ensuing kickoff and drove into Benedict territory with less than a minute remaining by running the ball to set up a potential game-winning field goal. The Tiger defense pressured the Allen quarterback on second-and-eight from the Benedict 36-yard line, and James “Trey” Caver intercepted the ball with 53 seconds left in regulation. The Tigers (3-4 overall, 3-2 SIAC) had a last second shot at the end zone, but the pass to Troy Hillman in the end zone was broken up. Allen (1-6 overall, 0-5 SIAC) scored first on a 76-yard pass in the first quarter. Benedict answered with a 28-yard scoring run by Damien Moate Jr. to tie the game at 7-7. The Yellow Jackets scored on a 32-yard pass in the second quarter to take a 14-7 lead. Benedict tied the game on a 12-yard run by A’chean Durant with 1:10 left in the first half to tie the game at 14. The Tigers took their first lead of the game on an 18-yard pass from Simmons to Williams. The PAT failed, giving Benedict a 20-14 lead with 11:40 left in the third quarter. Allen took the ensuing kickoff and drove 77 yards on 12 plays to score on a six-yard run for a 21-20 lead. Allen added two field goals in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 27-20. Patterson led the Benedict defense with 13 total tackles, including 5 ½ tackles for loss and one sack. The Tigers return home next week for a Homecoming matchup against Miles College. Kickoff from Charlie W. Johnson Stadium is 2 p.m. Categories: Local Sports, South Carolina Sports, Sports
