The Wolves scored 14 points in the final 8:05 of the game, capped by a game winning 18-yard run by Quez Spells with 56 seconds remaining to rally Newberry from a 21-13 fourth quarter deficit for a 27-21 victory in Salisbury to spoil Catawba’s homecoming. Senior quarterback Reed Charpia engineered back-to-back drives of 75 and 81 yards to earn the victory to improve to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in South Atlantic Conference play. Catawba came into the game averaging 441 yards per game, including two consecutive games of over 500 yards, but the Wolves defense held the Indians to a season-low 273 yards. “I was very concerned with their offense,” said head coach Todd Knight.  “They took 96 snaps last week against Limestone and we held them to 50.  It was going downhill quickly, and we came storming back.  We will take a road win in this league anytime.” The Wolves racked up 26 first downs to just 11 for Catawba and totaled 391 yards of total offense. Dwayne Wright rumbled for 142 yards on 23 carries and a score and Spells added 62 yards on eight attempts and a pair of touchdowns as the Wolves rolled up 200 yards rushing on the evening. Charpia finished with 18 completions in 28 attempts for 191 yards with a touchdown after missing last week’s game at Lenoir-Rhyne with an injury. Devron Williams led the Wolves’ defense with six total tackles, five solo, while Colby Taylor added five and four of them solo. Punter Burke Nettles averaged 40.2 yards per kick with four of his five attempts downed inside the Indian 20-yard line. After leading 6-0 at the half and 13-0 late in the third quarter, Catawba scored the next 21 points in just three minutes and 45 seconds to grab a 21-13 lead with 13:12 remaining. But in their final two drives the Wolves offense converted on all four third down attempts and scored two touchdowns after making just one of eight third down attempts over the first three plus quarters of the game. Down 21-13, Charpia completed a third and nine pass to Keith Desaussure to the Indian 15-yard line for a first down.  Three plays later he connected with Rico Dorsey Jr. on a 14-yard scoring pass on third down to cut the lead to 21-19. After forcing Catawba to punt and taking over at their own 19-yard line, Charpia hooked up with Dorsey again on third and 12 from the Wolves’ 42-yard line for a 23-yard reception to give Newberry a first down at the Indian 35-yard line. A personal four penalty gave Newberry the ball at the Catawba 18-yard line, Spells ripped off the game winning run.  Charpia then executed the two-point conversion on a pass to defensive end Colby Taylor to give the Wolves a 27-21 lead. After Byrce Earley kicked the ball out the end zone for a touchback, Jalen Stradford intercepted a Hunter Sheppard pass to seal the victory. The Wolves defense held the Indians to just 46 yards passing after Catawba threw for 231 yards the previous week against Limestone. After two consecutive weeks on the road, the Wolves return home to host Barton at 4:00 p.m. at Setzler Field. Categories: Local Sports, South Carolina Sports, Sports
