BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- October 18th marked the start of a special weekend in Delano and they're showing up in droves for it. What started as a small gathering is now so much more. The theme for this year is "We Are Back," after returning from a 5-year hiatus brought on by the pandemic. "We're going to have a great time, it's nice weather," said Gina Martinez, who attended the festival with Tess Batricio, owner of Fil Bake Shop. Fil Bake Shop is the only Filipino bakery in Delano and lovingly supplied traditional Filipino baked goods for the festival. "After the pandemic, I was so glad that we have a bigger place now, in a cooler month," said Batricio, reminiscing when the festival was held in the heat of mid-July. "Hopefully everyone will enjoy. We have plenty of food and vendors." It's not just food and vendors they've got here at the festival. This year, there's also a car show and competition, so car junkies can show off their wheels. Larry Deleon is a retired Navy veteran who came by to show off his 2002 Honda with low suspension, velvet-colored seats and an entire DJ setup in the trunk. Naturally, he showed off some of his DJ skills during the festival as well. As for the cost of the whip as a whole? Well, Deleon wouldn't say for his own safety. "I plead the fifth on that, because if I tell you, my wife will kill me," laughs Deleon. "It's fully done, suspension, rims, interior, exterior, engine bay, trunk." Deleon also believes the DJ system he's got in the trunk is the only one like it in California. "One of one, in California that I know of," said Deleon. "Same setup that I have? No." Obviously for Deleon, it's not just his car he's here to show off, but his culture as well, in a festival made for everyone to come and enjoy. "We get everyone from all over California to come down here and just experience our heritage," said Deleon. "Dances, lots of ethnic foods here." For Martinez, she says being in a multicultural area like Delano allows her and many others to share in everyone's cultures. "We really, really enjoy each other's diversity," said Martinez. "This is a multicultural community, so this is the one place where you can get a little bit of everything." The Philippine Weekend Festival continues, as you may have guessed, throughout the weekend until Sunday, October 20 at the 40 Acres on Garces Highway in Delano.
