Gilmour and Wellington, campus to campus, are separated by 57 miles. The Lancers’ display in the attack Oct. 19 during a Division IV sectional final made it feel like double that on the pitch. Carter Richmond had a hand in four goals, Evan Saline and P.J. Kunchik each bagged a brace and Gilmour could not have been more clinical in an 8-1 rout. The Lancers are 12-2-4 and will host Lincoln-West in a D-III Northeast 4 District semifinal at 7 p.m. Oct. 23. On paper, it seemed like a match with potential, as the Dukes came in 13-2-2 and among the most potent D-IV sides in Greater Cleveland. Gilmour rendered it anything but. They’re one-touch passes. I don’t think Wellington was used to the pace. We’ve been preaching it all year. Our fitness and our pace, we have to keep it up for 80 minutes. And I think we showed it in the first half.” Amid Wellington operating in a back five with a sweeper, Gilmour found pockets of space in a manner only surpassed by its brilliant, pacey and efficient service. Then Kunchik collected Richmond service for a smooth strike from the top of the box in the sixth. Kunchik (22nd), Saline (23rd) and Richmond (38th) notched their respective braces from there, it was 6-0 at half and the match was well in hand. We weren’t playing well. And we took it upon ourselves to discuss internally what we need to do better. That has combined in finding Evan, finding David (Kleyner) on the wings, two excellent players. Using our midfield, all combining up top to me. “It’s a whole season worth of work to start picking apart defenses like that.” Wellington got on the board through a lovely outswinger from distance in the 46th minute by senior Zach Barnes.
