LAWRENCE TWP. — Becca Boggs has grown up around Lawrence High girls soccer. Now she sits atop its record book. With two assists in a 5-0 victory over West Windsor-Plainsboro North in the first round of the CVC Tournament on Saturday, Boggs equaled the program’s all-time assists record with 27. “I wasn’t really focused on it, but I think that a huge accomplishment because I’ve definitely improved since freshman year,” said Boggs, who needs one more helper to move past LHS Hall of Famer Erica Young into the top spot. “Just mentally and physically, I’ve improved a lot.” Young set the record from 1996-99 when she was playing for Boggs’ father Dave. Becca has got better in each of her three seasons. She had four goals and two assists as a freshman, upped that to seven and nine as a sophomore and is the midst of breakout junior campaign. She already has a double-double with 10 goals and a league-leading 16 assists and is on the shortlist for CVC Player of the Year. “I was very in my head in some moments,” Boggs said when asked how she’s improved. “I’ve learned to stay composed and take deep breaths and know that my teammates are behind me, so if I make a mistake just regroup and work back from it.” Coach Emily Palombo applauded the progress Boggs has made this fall. “It shows a lot of growth about her as an athlete and a person,” Palombo said. When Lawrence (10-6) is going good, it’s one of the top scoring teams in the CVC. Michaela Little had a hat trick — the senior is up to 16 goals — and Ava Donnelly and Caelyn LaFlamme also scored. That gives the Cards four players with at least eight goals. “I think we knew we were capable because we have a lot of offensive threats,” Palombo said. “When they are able to put it together, move off the ball and find each other then people can finish.” Lawrence is also trying to turn the page on a tough run of form in division play. The Cards went 1-6 in the CVC Colonial and finished last, but six of those seven games were decided by one goal and the one that wasn’t was a 4-2 loss to Notre Dame in which they led 2-0. “You can’t dwell on it,” Boggs said. “We know we can learn from mistakes we made, but say we lose the ball in transition or something, I think we learned to get behind the ball and work back as hard as possible. You just got to come back harder.” WW-PN (6-9) 0 0 — 0 Lawrence (10-6) 1 4 — 5 Goals: Little 3, Donnelly, C. LaFlamme (L). Assists: Boggs 2, C. LaFlamme (L). Shots: 6 (WWN). 24 (L).
