EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Chapin High School basketball standout Jayden Leverett — arguably the best high school basketball player in El Paso right now — made his commitment to Vanderbilt on Saturday, Oct. 19. In front of family, friends, teammates, and coaches at Chapin High School, Leverett dunked on a court with the Vanderbilt logo on it, marking his decision to become a Commodore. Vanderbilt men's basketball is entering a new era. Vanderbilt fired head coach Jerry Stackhouse after five seasons back in March. Later that month, Vanderbilt named Mark Byington as the program's new head coach. Byington headed to Vanderbilt after he led James Madison to a historic season in 2023-24. The Dukes recorded a program-record 32 wins and collected its first NCAA tournament win since 1983. Leverett picked Vanderbilt over Oklahoma State, New Mexico, and Colorado. Those four schools were Leverett's final four that he revealed earlier this month. The four-star center collected a total of 15 offers from NCAA Division I programs throughout his high-school career at Chapin. According to 247 Sports, Leverett is a four-star recruit, a Top 150 player in the Class of 2025, and a Top 25 Center in the Class of 2025. Leverett is entering his senior year of high school. Last year, he had a breakout season, averaging 14.1 points per game, 7.8 rebounds per game, and 1.9 blocks per game. The 6-foot-10 big man was a key player on Chapin’s squad that went 34-5 overall and 10-0 in District 1-5A play. The Huskies made a deep playoff run and played its way to the Class 5A Regional Final (Elite 8).
