SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- In a step toward sustainability and enhanced community safety, San Diego officials celebrated the completion of the city’s newest fire station — Fire Station 52 — on Thursday. This included Mayor Todd Gloria, UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla, Council President Pro Tem Joe LaCava, and San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) Chief Robert Logan. Located at the northwest corner of UC San Diego's campus along North Torrey Pines Road, the state-of-the-art facility spans over 14,000 square-feet across two stories. It is designed to improve fire protection coverage for the Torrey Pines area and surrounding communities. Two San Diego-area restaurants among highest-rated fine-dining spots in US: study “I’m excited to celebrate the completion of this top-notch facility featuring San Diego’s first electric fire truck and rapid charger,” Mayor Gloria said during the ceremony. “This partnership with UC San Diego is a testament to our commitment to enhancing fire protection while prioritizing environmental sustainability.” Fire Station 52 includes three apparatus bays, sleeping quarters for nine personnel, offices for firefighters and the battalion chief, a kitchen, exercise room, and on-site parking. Its innovative design supports the city’s Climate Action Plan, marking a significant milestone in municipal sustainability efforts. Fire Chief Robert Logan emphasized the importance of providing firefighters with the necessary resources to protect the community. “This collaborative effort not only benefits our staff and the community but the environment as well,” he stated. The $22.2 million facility is the result of a decade-long partnership between the city and UC San Diego. The university contributed $20.5 million for the construction and provided the land for the station, while the electric fire apparatus, valued at $2.1 million, was financed through city funds. Council President Pro Tem Joe LaCava highlighted the station’s dual focus on safety and sustainability," stating, “Through this continued partnership with UC San Diego, Station 52 will provide first-class equipment and facilities, ultimately improving response times and enhancing accessibility for our first responders.” UC San Diego Chancellor Khosla praised the project as a model of community collaboration. “This exemplifies what can be achieved through strong partnerships, reaffirming UC San Diego’s commitment to the well-being of our neighborhood and region,” he said. Since 2014, the City of San Diego has opened new fire stations in six neighborhoods and renovated four others, enhancing emergency response capabilities across the city.
