Western Christian, Roosevelt flag football teams make Division 1 cut for inaugural CIFSS playoffs
Oct 19, 2024
Western Christian, a private school located in Upland, has a listed enrollment of 657 on the CIF Southern Section website.
Despite that small size, the school’s girls flag football team made the Division 1 cut for the inaugural Southern Section playoffs.
Western Christian finished 14th in the section’s final in-season rankings, now used in most sports to determine playoff divisions. The Lancers (24-3) the Ambassador League champions, play at No. 3-seeded Huntington Beach (19-7) on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Western Christian is the smallest school with a team in the Division 1 bracket. The next smallest is Lakewood St. Joseph which has an enrollment of 1,116, according to the section website. The Lancers (24-3) have played a tough schedule, with the losses to Orange Lutheran (No. 1 seed in Division 1), Newport Harbor (No. 2 seed in Division 1) and Esperanza (a Division 2 qualifier).
Roosevelt is on the opposite end of the spectrum, with a section-high enrollment of 4,575. The Mustangs (18-2) also made the cut for the Division 1 playoffs after winning the Big VIII League title and finishing 16th in the section rankings. Roosevelt will head to Orange Lutheran (19-2) on Oct. 26. Those teams met in September, with Orange Lutheran cruising to a 54-6 nonleague victory.
In total, 36 of the 62 Inland schools that fielded a varsity flag football team qualified for the inaugural Southern Section playoffs.
Five area teams will be in the Division 2 playoffs. Palomares League champion Bonita (14-0) is the No. 2 seed and plays host Sonora (10-5) in a first-round game Tuesday, Oct. 22. Citrus Belt League champ Beaumont (15-0) also earned a home game on Tuesday against Warren (16-7). Three Big VIII League teams are on the road for Division 2 playoff openers Tuesday night: Centennial (8-4) plays at Northwood (13-4); Santiago (8-3) heads at Esperanza (13-11); Corona (13-7) plays at Redondo (12-2).
Linfield Christian, the Ambassador League runner-up, earned the No. 1 seed in the Division 3 playoff bracket. The Lions (18-7) host Anaheim (13-4) in a first-round game Tuesday. Ivy League champ Hillcrest (17-2) is the No. 4 seed in the Division 3 bracket and hosts Hart (17-6) in Tuesday’s opening round.
Baseline League champion Upland (18-5) will face a familiar foe, Rancho Cucamonga (15-7), in Tuesday’s Division 3 opening round. Those teams met twice during league play, with Upland pulling out wins of 7-6 and 30-25.
Ivy League runner-up North (8-8) is seeded third in Division 4 and hosts Sunkist League co-champ Summit (14-6) on Tuesday.
