Meat Recalled Over Listeria Concerns Sent to Over 20 Jersey City Schools

Meat and poultry products recalled due to potential listeria contamination were shipped to over a dozen Jersey City district schools, according to a new list released by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.“On Friday, October 11, 2024, we immediately identified recalled items in our schools,” Superintendent of Schools Norma Fernandez told The Patch. “The recall impacted the pre-plated meal items served in some schools. Since the District was closed on Monday, October 14, 2024, the distributing company picked up all the recalled items from all identified schools early on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.”She added that JCPS will continue to follow all the USDA recall recommendations.In an update shared Thursday, FSIS released a “preliminary list” of hundreds of schools that received the recalled ready-to-eat products from BrucePac. BrucePac, which supplies chicken, beef, turkey, and pork products, serves industrial, food service, and retail clients, according to its website.This month, the company recalled over 11.7 million pounds of meat and poultry products after routine testing indicated possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.According to the preliminary list, some of the Jersey City schools that received these recalled products include:Danforth Avenue Early Childhood Center, 160 Danforth Avenue

Renaissance Institute, 128 Duncan AvenueIn New Jersey, recalled items were also sold at stores including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Aldi, and Trader Joe’s.No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported so far, according to the USDA.Listeria infections typically cause fever, muscle aches and tiredness and may cause stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. Symptoms can appear shortly after consuming contaminated food or up to 10 weeks later.
